Eradicating Rat Populations - PROTEGE

Available Online

Operations to eradicate rat population have been taking place on islets in French Polynesia and in Wallis and Futuna to preserve native species and ecosystems threatened by these rodents. The main goal are to strengthen the resilience of communities on Ua Pou and Wallis to preserve populations of native species. These include the seabirds that nest on the islets of the Marquesas archipelago, as well as the birds, turtles, crabs and plants that comprise the ecosystems of the islets in the lagoon of Wallis.

Des opérations d’éradication du rat ont été mises en œuvre sur des îlots de Polynésie française et à Wallis et Futuna pour préserver les espèces et les écosystèmes natifs menacés par ces rongeurs. Les principaux objectifs sont de renforcer la résilience des communautés d’Ua Pou et de Wallis et de préserver les populations d’espèces natives. Parmi celles-ci figurent des oiseaux marins qui nichent sur les îlots de l’archipel des Marquises ainsi que des oiseaux, des tortues, des crabes et des végétaux qui composent les écosystèmes des îlots du lagon de Wallis. Au-delà de la protection des espèces directement menacées, les objectifs ont été de restaurer les équilibres et les services écosystémiques auxquels ces espèces participent, notamment par la fertilisation des récifs coralliens et des eaux côtières. Le projet a visé l’amélioration de la sécurité alimentaire, en réduisant les dommages causés aux cultures vivrières, ainsi que la diminution de risques de maladies véhiculées par les rats, telle la leptospirose. Grâce à la formation et l’implication des acteurs locaux, ainsi qu’au recours à des techniques innovantes, trois îlots de l’archipel des Marquises et 13 îlots du lagon de Wallis sont désormais exempts de la présence du rat. Bien que tous les bénéfices écologiques de ces opérations ne soient pas encore pleinement connus, une recrudescence des populations de tortues et de crabes a déjà été observée sur les îlots de Wallis. Dispositif de biosécurité inter-îles/îlots et de surveillance du milieu - Fiche de capitalisation - PROTEGE

Des dispositifs de biosécurité et de surveillance des milieux ont été définis et mis en œuvre entre les îles de Futuna et d’Alofi, ainsi qu’entre ‘Uvea et les îlots du lagon de Wallis. Ces dispositifs visent à prévenir la propagation d’espèces exotiques envahissantes (EEE), notamment pour pérenniser les bénéfices des actions d’éradication et de restauration menées dans le cadre du projet. Leur mise en œuvre a donné lieu à de nombreuses actions de sensibilisation et de formation, visant à encourager l’adoption de gestes de prévention. La formation des services techniques et la fourniture d’équipements ont également permis de déployer un dispositif de suivi qui a déjà démontré des résultats concrets, notamment en identifiant une incursion de rats dans deux îlots de Wallis. L’action rapide qui a suivi cette identification a permis d’éviter la ré-invasion des rats, démontrant la forte complémentarité des actions menées dans le projet. Ua Pou Islets Pacific Rat Eradication - PROTEGE Final Monitoring and Biosecurity Report

The Ua Pou islets Pacific rat eradication operation was undertaken in August-September 2023. It attempted a global first of aerially broadcasting rodent bait by drone from a small ship in open sea across the islets of Motu Tākaè, Motu Oa, and Motu Mokohe, at Ua Pou in the Marquesas Islands. The aerial bait application resulted in only two of the three islands having bait successfully applied across their entirety, nonetheless, monitoring 12 months later has confirmed Motu Oa and Motu Tākaè are rat free as is the partially isolated section of Motu Mokohe that was also baited. The eradication success is supported by the establishment of biosecurity knowledge and practices throughout the Ua Pou communities. The results of the seabird and other environmental monitoring will help sustain a commitment over time, as well as benefiting the wider conservation community. The operation demonstrated that drones could be operated off a boat for rodent eradication purposes but was constrained by the consistently strong winds and swell conditions. A larger vessel with a deeper draught is recommended for similar operations in the future and would likely increase the number of flyable days and improve the ease with which take-offs and landings are undertaken by the drone pilots.

Tokelau/Kimoa Rat, feral pig and feral cat eradication Operational Plan

This operational plan presents the methodology and logistics for executing eradications of Pacific rats (Rattus exulans), Feral pigs (Sus scrofa) and feral cats (Felis catus) in Tokelau. This document stems directly from a feasibility report completed in January 2024. For details on the site, biodiversity values, the target species etc, please refer to the feasibility report. Planning issues and dependencies that must be resolved in the planning stage of the eradication were identified in the feasibility report. Pre-eradication trials were proposed to resolve questions around tools and techniques; the methodology for these trials is developed in Section 1 below. This should be used as a “living document”, the contents of which will inevitably change as planning for the eradication proceeds and as the results of pre-eradication trials are reported.

The goal of this assessment is to assess the feasibility of permanently eradicating rats, feral cats and feral pigs from the entire territory of Tokelau and preventing the reinvasion of these species in the future. The intended audience are the decision makers of Tokelau, and, by extension, the community. The assessment will also be socialized amongst practitioners in the field of invasive mammal eradications for peer review.

Apolima Island Rat Eradication Feasibility Assessment

This report assesses the feasibility of eradicating rats from Apolima – a 115ha island inhabited by approximately 80 people, located in the Apolima Straight between the two main islands of Samoa. The Department of Conservation led the assessment, in collaboration with Samoa’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the South Pacific Regional Environment Programme, and the Apolima Island community. Rats have been eradicated from similar sized tropical islands with equally challenging terrain, but the steep slopes and cliffs on Apolima require poison bait to be applied from the air to succeed. This method of broadcast baiting is the logical method for the rest of the island in combination with more careful placement of bait around the village area.
