In this report only immediate policy issues related to disaster risk reduction and disaster management that need to be tackled specifically in relation to the flooding in the sugar belt are highlighted4. Two categories of recommendations are relevant in this context of flooding in the sugar belt area - those that need to be addressed by the Government of Fiji within its disaster risk management context, and those that are of direct relevance to the Fiji sugar industry.

The January 2009 floods in Fiji were reported as the worst in the history of the country since the 1931 floods. Many parts of the country were affected by a number of consecutive flood events that spread over several days. The floods affected areas from Western Viti Levu where the impact was greatest, to the Northern and Central Divisions of Fiji. With excessive rainfall experienced for over a week most of the low lying areas in the country were under water for days and in places experienced flood levels of up to 3-5 metres.

The Fiji Multi-Country Office’s MDG-related support to the PICs took different forms, but most prominent among these has been the technical assistance provided to support the nine countries prepare and produce their first MDG Progress Reports. Beyond the production of the nine MDG country reports, the technical assistance also envisaged the processes of preparation of MDG reports to yield several additional benefits, both tangible and intangible. All nine countries covered by the Fiji MCO have now produced their respective MDG reports.

The Regional Capacity Development Workshop on Wetlands Management with Focus on the Ramsar Convention in the Pacific Island Countries was held in Nadi Fiji, from 9-13 March 2009. The workshop was made possible through funding under the Pacific Island Wetlands Initiative, which is an Initiative operating within the framework of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. The workshop was jointly organized and delivered by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), The Ramsar Convention Secretariat and the IUCN regional office for Oceania (See annex 1 for the workshop program).
