This report covers the Republic of Palau component of a project involving used oil audits in selected Pacific Island countries. The objective of the audits is to establish volumes of lubricating, hydraulic and transmission oils imported annually into each country and the volumes of used oil produced, stored or otherwise disposed. The work has been carried out by Contract Environmental Ltd under a contract to the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), with funding provided by the Global Environment Facility. Most of the information required for the audit has been obtained in a country visit undertaken by Martyn O'Cain from 26 to 31 May 2014 and was organized through the Palau Environment Quality Protection Board (EQPB).

The Palau Islands, located in Western Micronesia, contain some of the most diverse and pristine ecosystems in the world. These diverse habitats are home to an extraordinarily high number of marine and terrestrial species that are essential to the culture, economy and livelihoods of the Palauan people. Many species and ecosystems are endemic or rare and conserving Palaus resources is important globally. Palaus efforts to conserve its biodiversity and manage its natural resources are greatly aided by the fact that there is an enabling environment for biodiversity conservation. Since the drafting of Palaus NBSAP (2005) almost 10 years ago, biodiversity conservation in general and community-based conservation activities in particular have grown considerably in Palau. Local communities have designated protected areas throughout the country in order to protect species and sites important to them. The number of these protected areas in Palau has more than doubled in the past 10 years. A national framework for protected areas now exists in Palau: the Palau Protected Areas Network (PAN). PANs goal is to provide national level support for protected area management activities at the local level. Protected areas are recognized at the regional and international level through the Micronesia Challenge.

Palau National Invasive Species Committee Strategic Action Plan 2013 - 2017

A workshop was held for members and partners of the Palau National Invasive Species Committee (NISC) from March 26-28, 2013, with the purpose of drafting a strategic action plan (SAP). Workshop participants initially carried out a review of the goals and objectives of the previous NISC action plan (2007-10). The goals were then revised, and a new goal, Goal 6, was adopted, to ensure that activities in the plan are adequately resourced. Objectives were drafted for this plan to define the role of the NISC as a coordination and facilitation body, and to provide activities for NISC member and partner agencies. Objectives were prioritized in terms of logical sequence of activities, urgency of need, and those which are clearly within the responsibility of the NISC and its partners; actions were identified for all the objectives. This plan was adopted by the NISC on May 24, 2013.
