Vanuatu is a Y-shaped archipelago located in the Southwest Pacific Ocean at 13-20o S, 166o 172o E. There is a distance of roughly 1,300 km from northernmost island to the southernmost. The countrys coastline extends for 2,528 km long and comprises over 80 islands with a total land area of 12,336 km2 , set within a 200- mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of approximately 680,000Km2 . Vanuatus islands are geologically young and were formed during the four main volcanic activity periods. The oldest islands are the Torres Group; this group of islands is part of the most northern province of TORBA. Santo the largest island in the SANMA province and Malekula, the larger island in the MALAMPA province, were formed over 22 million years ago. Pentecost and Maewo, islands are the PENAMA province are the second oldest, and were formed between 4 to 11 million years ago.

The Vanuatu Government has, with support from JICA, initiated a project to refurbish an expland Lapetasi Wharf in Port Vila (Port Vila Lapetasi International Multi-Purpose Wharf). The aim is to increase the country's capacity to deal with international freight and cruise ship tourism. The development entails construction of a new multi-purpose wharf facility of ~200m that is capable of berthing two large vessels at the same time.

PacWaste (Pacific Hazardous Waste) is a four year (2013-2017), 7.85 million, project funded by the European Union and implemented by Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) to improve regional hazardous waste management in 14 Pacific island countries plus Timor Leste, in the priority areas of healthcare waste, asbestos, E-waste and integrated atoll solid waste management. Asbestos-containing wastes and materials are a major issue for many Pacific Island countries with a history of use of asbestos-containing building materials in construction. All forms of asbestos are carcinogenic to humans and inhalation of asbestos fibres that have become airborne can cause serious lung disease or cancer.

PacWaste is working across 14 Pacific island countries and Timor-Leste to improve the management of healthcare waste. This waste type, also known as hospital, clinical or medical waste, is generated by hospitals and health clinics. Healthcare waste is hazardous because it has the potential to be infectious or harmful to humans and the environment. In Vanuatu, PacWaste conducted a healthcare waste management baseline survey in March 2014, through which information was collected on current waste management processes, from ward-level waste generation through to treatment and disposal. Audits were conducted at: Port Vila Central Hospital Port (Shefa Province); Northern Districts Hospital (Sanma Province); Lenakel Hospital (Tafea Province); Norsup Hospital (Malampa Province); and Panunagis Health Centre (Shefa Province).

Mangrove ecosystems plays an extremely important role in our communities because of the goods that they provide in the production of wood for fuel and construction, the invertebrates and finfish for subsistence and commercial fisheries but also the services provided in coastal protection from storm surges, bio-remediation, sediment trapping and carbon sequestration in mangrove soils mitigating climate change.
