Island Restoration to Rebuild Seabird Populations and Amplify Coral Reef Functioning

Mobile organisms like seabirds can provide important nutrient flows between ecosystems but this connectivity has been interrupted by the degradation of island ecosystems. Island restoration (via invasive species eradication and the restoration of native vegetation) can reestablish seabird populations and their nutrients transfer between their foraging areas, breeding colonies and adjacent nearshore habitats.

The El Niño Southern Oscillation is currently neutral. However, the Bureau's ENSO Outlook is at La Niña Watch, due to some early signs that an event might form in the Pacific Ocean later in 2024. A La Niña Watch does not guarantee that a La Niña will develop. There is about an equal chance of neutral ENSO conditions in the same outlook period.

As a result, the Bureau's ENSO Outlook has shifted to La Niña Watch. When La Niña tch criteria have been met in the past, a La Niña event has subse-quently developed around 50% of the time. There is about an equal chance of neutral ENSO conditions in the same outlook period. Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the central Pacific have been steadily cooling since December 2023.

The El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is currently neutral. Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the central Pacific have been steadily cooling since December 2023. This surface cooling is supported by a significant amount of sub-surface cooling underneath the central and eastern Pacific. Recent cloud and surface pressure patterns are also neutral.

Tuki and the Turtle’ is a comic book in pidgin language illustrated by the famous Papuan illustrator Gima Segore. In the book, you can join Tuki and his uncle as they learn about sea turtles in the Pacific! In one day, they find turtle nests, meet a large adult female turtle and watch hatchlings take their first steps into the ocean. Six of the seven known species of sea turtle live in the Pacific Ocean; the green, hawksbill, loggerhead, leatherback, olive ridley and the flatback. Sadly, five of these species are threatened with extinction. By following the simple examples in this comic book, we can all play a part in preserving our endangered Pacific sea turtles. This comic offers: a) An accessible educational story aimed at Pacific Island communities. b) Information about the threats faced by turtles in the Pacific. c) Steps communities can take to protect their turtle populations.
