As a Party, Solomon Islands is obliged to enact national regulations to bring the conventions into the national regulatory framework. It is these national laws and regulations that then provide the implementing mechanisms to manage asbestos and ensure compliance with the conventions.

The Vuri Forest Conservation Area (VFCA) is part of the Vuri Clan customary land and is under ownership of the tribal people of the Vuri Clan of Sikipozo tribe. Some of these traditional landowners live in Sasamungga village in South Choiseul, while the majority live in other parts of Choiseul province and other parts of the country

The predominant waste management solution offered in the Solomon Islands is landfilling, and recent audits suggest over half of all the waste to landfill is organic in nature and able to be composted rather landfilled. A large amount of the remaining materials are recyclable - meaning the design and implementation of diversion projects could significantly reduce the amount of waste to landfill. As such, the Solomon Islands Government seeks to focus the PacWastePlus investment to design and implement an organic processing system to manage organic waste, and will commence this work through the collection and processing of all organic wastes generated at the Gizo Market

In its first NDC, Solomon Islands has committed to reduce emissions by 12% below 2015 level by 2025 and 30% below 2015 level by 2030 compared to a business-as-usual projection (BaU). However with international assistance Solomon Islands can further reduce its emissions by 27% by 2025; and 45% by 2030. This would make the overall reduction by Solomon Islands more than 50% by 2050.

Dolphin hunts used to be widely spaced out but scale of hunting increased enormously in the 60's for unknown reasons.

Improved information and data on seagrass and dugong through CMS questionnaires, mapping and awareness raising. Some places dugongs are revered tribal totems and have cultural stories attached to them. As such they are not eaten.

Responsibilities for waste and environmental management exist within a range of legislation and regulations, but no single point of control exists to regulate planning and operation. An analysis of the main national waste situation has been undertaken in the National Waste Management and Pollution Control Strategy 2017-2026.

This report was commissioned by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat at the request of the Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
