The Samoa Ocean Strategy - (SOS) provides a nationally agreed roadmap for ocean governance in Samoa over the next decade. To achieve its purpose and vision, the SOS identifies thirtheen Integrated Management Solutions including completion of a marine spatial plan (MSP) for Samoa's ocean.

The role that natural ecosystems, especially marine and coastal ecosystems, play in human wellbeing is often overlooked or taken for granted. The benefits of humans receive from ecosystems called ecosystem service. Coastal and marine resources and biodiversity provide Samoa's businesses and households and government many real and measurable benefits.

Samoa's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) covers 120,00 square kilometers of ocean, which is 40 times larger than the country's land area. The economy is highly dependent on the stock of its natural ocean wealth which supports its fisheries, tourism and coastal community livelihoods.

This study, conducted in early 2022, aimed to determine the economic value of seven marine and coastal ecosystem services in Samoa. The assessment focuses on the value of ecosystem services in the year 2019 and provides information on trends overtime where possible.
