Oceania’s humpback whales are of global conservation concern having recently been re‐ classified from “Threatened” to “Endangered” by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Although humpback whales in many parts of the world are showing encouraging signs of recovery from past exploitation, the small breeding populations in the South Pacific Islands region remain vulnerable to extinction.

The objectives for the SEA?PACC training workshop for the PACC food security teams were: 1. To understand how to use SEA?PACC to conduct climate?related socioeconomic assessments that support vulnerability assessment and adaptation planning; 2. To understand and gain experiences in all steps of conducting a SEA?PACC; 3. To gain first?hand experience in developing and using a household survey questionnaire to collect data; 4. To be able to interpret and use data for adaptation planning and strategy development; 5. And, after the workshop, to be able to guide others in using SEA?PACC guidelines and in conducting SEA?PACC assessments.

The objectives for the training for the PACC teams working on water were: 1. To understand how to use SEA?PACC to conduct climate?related socioeconomic assessments that support adaptation planning and the evaluation of adaptation projects; 2. To understand and gain experiences in all steps of conducting SEA?PACC; 3. To be able to collect data using household surveys and key informant interviews; 4. To be able to interpret and make use of data for adaptation planning and strategy development; 5. And, after the workshop, to be able to guide others in using SEA?PACC guidelines and conduct SEA? PACC assessments with team members who have skills that contribute to the assessment.

Pacific Island Countries (PICs) are among the most vulnerable states due to limited land availability, fragile ecosystems, limited water resources, increasing population pressures, and limited buffering capacities. Solid and hazardous waste, including unintentional Persistent Organic Pollutants (uPOPs) are a major threat to sustainable development in PICs because of poor waste management practices that have a direct influence over peoples' lives.
