Waste received at the main landfill in Vanuatu comprises 35% beverage containers, which are also seen as litter and in dumpsites or burnt in pits. Vanuatu is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, but lacks resources and infrastructure to safely and effectively manage the waste caused by these events.

Tuvalu’s Outer Islands have not received significant support for waste management, and do not: • Have facilities to participate in the Waste Levy (implemented in Funafuti 2019) so all items are disposed to the environment or dumps. • Have understanding of the presence of Asbestos and impact on human health

Landfilling recyclable and organic materials leads to significant environmental challenges. Organic waste decomposing in landfills under anaerobic conditions generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change

Improper management of electronic waste (e-waste) poses significant environmental and health hazards. Toxic substances such as lead, mercury, and cadmium can leach into soil and water, contaminating ecosystems and harming wildlife .

Items are imported into Niue but there are limited viable options for their end-of-life management.

Items are imported into the Cool Islands in growing numbers but there are currently limited viable options for their end-of-life management and or export. Most items imported are disposed of at landfills or stockpiled on vacant land.

Recognising Tuvalu has insufficient space to continually rely on waste disposal and stockpiling, the Tuvalu department of waste management (DWM) has recently implemented several initiatives to improve solid and hazardous waste management and reduce risks to their people and environment. Many of these initiatives have focused on the capital island, Funafuti - home to 50% of the population. The DWM now seeks to extend waste management initiatives to Tuvalu’s eight Outer Islands.

Items are imported into Niue in growing numbers, but there are currently limited viable options for their end-of-life management and/or export. As such most items imported are disposed of at the dumpsites or stockpiled on vacant land. Electronic waste stockpiles, in particular are increasing resulting in increased pollution and health risks to Niue people. The priority for Niue is to introduce a financially sustainable system to enable the long term collection, management and export of recyclable and end of life electronic items, utilising the new Recycle facility (funded by the Government of Australia)
