The development of the Territorial Invasive Species Strategy Action Plan for Pitcairn is an activity under EDF11 OCT PROTÉGÉ (“Pacific Territories Regional Project for Sustainable Ecosystem Management” or “protect” in French), an initiative designed to promote sustainable and climate-change-resilient economic development in the European Pacific overseas countries and territories by emphasising biodiversity and renewable resources. PROTÉGÉ is a regional cooperation project that supports the public policies of the four Pacific Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs) – French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Pitcairn, and Wallis & Futuna, implemented and executed by SPREP.

Opening Remarks; Pacific Preparatory Meeting of the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD Pre-COP16). Attending the pre-COP are representatives from: 14 PICs from environment departments, as well as agriculture, fisheries and forestry – in person; Australia and New Zealand as metropolitan SPREP members – in person, PIRT partners including TNC, CI, WWF, Island Conservation -in person and virtual; and One CROP – SPC, SPREP and OPOC – in person and virtual And input from a few additional partners including FAO (in-person), and virtually from UNEP; SCBD, GLISAP, and University of NSW. Acknowledge financial support for pre-COP and COP from NZ MFAT under the CC grant. Collaboration with FAO to engage agriculture sector for this meeting, and for input into mainstreaming biodiversity into agriculture sector. Support also from SPREP’s and FAO ACP MEA3 project.

The Fifty-Third Pacific Islands Forum was held in Nuku’alofa, Tonga from 26 – 30 August 2024 and was attended by Heads of State and Government of Australia, the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of Fiji, French Polynesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Republic of Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and the Republic of Vanuatu. The Republic of Kiribati was represented at Ministerial level.

Best Practice for Tourism Interaction with Turtles, Pacific BioScapes Programme - Vanuatu

The Pacific BioScapes Programme is providing support to produce best practice guidelines and a code of conduct for tourism operators to guide how they can interact appropriately and safely with turtles in Vanuatu. Through BioScapes, the Vanuatu Environmental Science Society is consulting with stakeholders and the government, and reviewing other global and national criterias to produce the new guidelines.

The Pacific BioScapes Programme aims to provide enhanced local fisheries management capacity and national harvest strategies for key grouper species in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The Nature Conservancy will work alongside Marshall Islands Conservation Society, Marshall Islands Marine Resources Authority and other key stakeholders and partners to enhance management of coral reef fisheries and resilience of coral reef ecosystems by building local capacity to develop robust evidence-based harvest strategies that contribute to economic prosperity, food security and healthy reefs.
