Pacific Island Countries rely heavily on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) consultants to support environmental impact assessment studies for developments. As such, these environmental consultants and practitioners must possess competency in their selected field to be able to perform detailed assessments and develop effective management plans.

Also known as the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) Convention, this is for the protection of natural resources and environment of the South Pacific region and related protocols. Having entered into force in 1986, this is now undergoing a review. The Noumea Convention is the umbrella convention for the “Protocol for the Prevention of Pollution of the South Pacific Region by Dumping”, and the “Protocol Concerning Co-operation in Combating Pollution Emergencies in the South Pacific Region”.

The Cook Islands State of the Environment (SOE) Report provides us with the chart to make informed decisions to accurately report on key environmental issues. Develop and implement policies and programmes to improve environmental conditions in the Cook Islands. Understand financial implications for which Cook Islands Government and other agencies can identify areas that require financial input. Work together to update the SOE every five years

National SoE Reports give information about environmental and social conditions, trends and pressures for the country, and the surrounding seas. The SoE reporting process forms the basis for effective environmental and sustainable development planning by examining the current condition of environmental indicators influenced by national, regional, and global pressures. The report uses state and trend indicators to evaluate how these “state” conditions impact not only the environment, but also the economy and the livelihoods of a country’s citizens. The term “environment” is used holistically to include biophysical, social, and economic indicators. An SoE Report should be completed every five years.

Enhancing ocean governance for sustainable economic development in the Pacific Islands region by:| strengthening regional leadership and cooperation on oceans| establishing jurisdictional rights and responsibilities over maritime boundaries| supporting decision-making through improved access to information| conducting marine assessment and planning activities to understand ocean management priorities, mobilise and coordinate action, and monitor progress| building national and regional marine policy, planning, science and geospatial knowledge and capabilities.
