This is a brief overview of the work carried out under the Marine Debris Demonstration project to help strengthen the and enhance good waste practices in Samoa The project is a partnership between the Government of Samoa, United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), SPREP and the communities and private sector in Apia. There are four main areas in this project; community and media awareness; improved waste management in the ports of entry into Samoa in particular the Samoa Port and Samoa Airport; waste disposal facilities within the UNSIDS venue and the accommodation providers; and working with the communities to improve waste practices in Apia areas. This short film was produced for The Last Straw - Preventing our Oceans from becoming Dumps side event during the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States. The final documentary on this project will be completed and made available this year.

The Noumea Convention was negotiated under the framework of UNEP’s Regional Seas Programme and adopted in 1986. The Convention and its two related Protocols (Protocol for the Prevention of Pollution of the South Pacific Region by Dumping; Protocol Concerning Co? operation in Combating Pollution Emergencies in the South Pacific Region) entered into force on 22 August 1990.

Although the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) spreads across 822,779 square miles of the Pacific Ocean, its land mass is only 70 square miles in total and its maximum elevation is 2 metres. These facts alone make human life in RMI particularly reliant on stable conditions in the natural environment on land and sea, and provide a strong reason for looking after and preserving the conditions that have to date provided for the flourishing of Marshallese society.

As Papua New Guinea (PNG) is a Party to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), it has an obligation under this Convention to provide adequate waste reception facilities for ships calling at PNG ports. The objective of this project is to carry out a gap analysis on the adequacy of waste reception facilities provided specifically at the Port of Moresby (PoM), for ships normally calling at this port. This analysis is designed to provide an overview of the waste reception services currently provided at the port and identify any gaps in this service, including recommendations on how these gaps can be addressed. In addition, this analysis can assist in the assessment of PoM as a Regional Ships Waste Reception Centre for the purposes of a Regional Reception Facilities Plan for Regional Arrangements in the Pacific.

Marine spatial planning allows for effective stakeholder discussion and negotiation on how marine and coastal spaces can be used more effectively and sustainably.

A BIORAP is a biological inventory programme undertaken in marine and terrestrial environments, and is designed to rapidly assess the biodiversity of highly diverse areas. Options to manage threats and protect biodiversity of national or international significance are recommended to governing communities.
