The energy sector is important to Samoa's economic, social, infrastructure and environmental composition. This plan has therefore been developed using extensive consultation with many groups. The purpose of the Energy Sector Plan is to provide a comprehensive plan for the energy sector to deliver outcomes consistent with the overarching Strategy for the Development of Samoa (SDS) 2012-2016, with due regard for cross-cutting issues including emphasising the importance of raising living standards, increasing resilience and boosting productivity for sustainable development. It provides a resourcing framework to support implementation of the plan.

The review of the SPREP Regional Marine Species Action Plans (MSAP) 2008 – 2012 was conducted from the 8 – 14 March, 2012, at the Hexagon International Hotel, Nadi, Fiji Islands. The SPREP MSAPs are a composite of individual plans for whales and dolphins, marine turtles and dugongs.

A BIORAP is a biological inventory programme undertaken in marine and/or terrestrial environments, and is designed to rapidly assess the biodiversity of highly diverse areas. Options to manage threats and protect biodiversity of national or international significance are recommended to governing communities.

The Pacific Islands Greenhouse Gas Abatement through Renewable Energy Project (PIGGAREP) is a Global Environment Facility (GEF) US$5.25 million project in eleven Pacific Island Countries (PICs). Implementation of the project started on 1 January 2008. PIGGAREP’s planned five year duration has been extended to six and a half years, with a scheduled end date now of December 2013.

The overall objective of the project is to assist the Government of Samoa in its effort to support the relocation and rehabilitation of communities living in the Island of Upolu affected by the tsunami of September 29, 2009 through the provision of improved infrastructure access to relocation sites enhanced transport infrastructure and assistance to local communities to address future natural disasters.
