Pacific Island countries and territories already face a range of development challenges due to their specific geographic and socio-economic characteristics, and their generally high exposure to natural hazards. The projected changes to the climate of the Pacific Island region over the coming decades present another challenging dimension that the region will need to grapple with. These changes could compromise the very ability of Pacific communities to meet their economic development needs.

This document is a step-by-step guide to facilitating a one-day workshop on understanding climate change science and is targeted at audiences in the Pacific island region and Timor-Leste. The training module provides PowerPoint presentations with facilitator notes and explains participatory exercises aimed at enhancing capacity in understanding climate change science.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) affect many Pacific Island countries and their impacts can be sever in vulnerable island communities. An understanding of how tropical cyclones may change under future climates, including changes in windspeeds and associated rainfall, is essential for managing future climate risks and saving lives.

This Environmental Legislation Review for the Republic of Palau was carried out in Palau from February 23 to March 2, 1994. The Review is part of the South Pacific Regional Environment Programme's (SPREP) National Environmental Management Strategy (NEMS) project undertaken in seven Pacific Island countries. One component of the NEMS project is providing an inventory, description and assessment of laws relevant to the environment to enable governments to make their own decisions on the standards of environmental legislation required and set the pace for appropriate reforms. This Review follows a similar format to those undertaken in other countries under the NEMS project and the SPREP Regional Environment Technical Assistance (RETA) programme.
