This report summarises the findings and recommendation of the SPREP/AusAID Tonga Coastal Reforestation and Protection Project implemented by the Forestry Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) of the Kingdom of Tonga over a two year period from August 1993 to July 1995. The report stresses that coastal protection should be one of the highest priority development activities for small island communities and coastal reforestation and revegetaion using indigenous salt-tolerant coastal species, can be a cost-effective and technologically-feasible short and long term means of protecting coastal areas and communities from the negative impacts of natural disaster.
