Abstract

Sustainably managed forests have multiple environmental and socio-economic functions important at the global, national and local ; they also play a role crucial to sustainable development . The ability to have reliable and updated information on the state of forest resources - not only in relation to forest area and change but also with respect to such variables as growing stock , products wood and non -wood forest , carbon , protected areas , use of forests for recreational or other purposes , biological diversity and forests' contribution to savings national - is essential for decision making policies and programs forestry and sustainable development , and at all levels
